Understanding Holi’s Timing — The Lunar Calendar

Why Holi Date Changes Every Year

Unlike fixed-date festivals like Independence Day, Holi follows India’s ancient lunar calendar (Panchang), making it a moving celebration that dances with the moon’s rhythm.

The ancient verse reminds us:

“कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः”
Time follows divine order and cannot be transgressed.

Holi always falls on Purnima — the full moon day — of the Hindu month Phalguna (also called Phalgun). In the Gregorian calendar, this typically lands in late February or early March, perfectly timed with spring’s arrival when nature herself celebrates with blooming flowers and golden harvests.

The Two Days of Holi

Day 1 — Holika Dahan (Choti Holi)
On the evening before the full moon, communities gather to light massive bonfires. This is Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi, commemorating Prahlad’s miraculous rescue. Families circle the fire, offer prayers, roast grains, and symbolically burn their negativity.

The spiritual message echoes from the scriptures:

“सत्यं एव जयते” — Truth alone triumphs.

Auspicious Timing: The bonfire is lit during the Pradosh Kaal (post-sunset period) and Bhadra Mukh (inauspicious period) should be avoided. Priests consult the Panchang to determine the precise muhurat.

Day 2 — Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi)
The next morning, India erupts in colors! This is Rangwali Holi, Dhulandi, or Dhulheti — the main celebration where people drench each other in vibrant gulal and colored water from dawn till afternoon.

From the Bhakti tradition:“रसो वै सः” — The Divine is bliss itself.
